Early in the morning, meet and greet, then have breakfast. After that, travel to Mbarara and photograph the equator. You’ll continue to Mbarara, stopping for lunch along the way, before heading to Imaramagambo or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. You’ll arrive late at night and go for a nature walk. Hiking trails are also available, where you can see a wide variety of birds and primates.
Day 1: Early in the morning, meet and greet, have breakfast, and then travel to the Equator via Mbarara Pass. At 0700 hours, your driver/guide will meet you at your lodging. Starting early in the morning from Kampala, you will travel southwest and cross the Equator. You drive through savanna grasslands, passing banana plantations and herds of Ankole cattle, which are known for their enormous horns. You then continue your journey to Bwindi through the Kigezi highlands, also known as the “Switzerland of Africa,” with terraced farming and mountain scenery. Drive time is 9-10 hours.
Gorilla tracking and transfer to Bunyonyi Lake You’ll have an early morning breakfast before heading to the Park headquarters at 7:45 a.m. for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules with other trackers. To find the gorillas, you’ll have to trek through thickets and undergrowth with your guides, which can take anywhere from 1 to 8 hours. The densely forested landscape is crisscrossed by numerous animal trails that provide access to tourists. Once the gorillas have been located, you will have one hour to spend with them before being transferred to Lake Bunyonyi. The journey will take you through a beautiful part of the country known as the “Switzerland of Africa” due to its unique cool climate despite its proximity to the Equator. This lake is said to be one of western Uganda’s most beautiful spots. It is Africa’s second deepest lake [900 meters] and one of the few places in the country where swimming is considered safe due to the absence of bilharzia. Bunyonyi Safari Resort will host dinner and overnight.
Enjoy a canoe ride on this lake before heading to Entebbe. Before you leave the “Land of the Mountain Gorillas,” get up early, eat breakfast, and go for a canoe ride on this lake. You’ll have wonderful memories of your time with the fascinating Mountain Gorillas. Lunch will be served on the way back to Kampala. Then make your way to Entebbe Airport to catch your flight back home.
